VCE Biology Incursion
UNIT 1: Area of Study 1
Surface Area to Volume Ratio, Diffusion and Concentration Gradients
Have your students learn about the concepts of surface area to volume ratio, diffusion and concentration gradients in a highly engaging and motivating manner. The workshop is presented by Dr Brad Rundle – a highly experienced educator and animal behaviourist.
Dr Rundle explains the concepts alongside his amazing dog Radar.
Dr Rundle demonstrates Radar’s ability to use his nose in scent detection. In doing so, he talks students through the remarkable physiology of the canine that allows it to detect an odour that may be undetectable to humans. Radar’s abilities are linked directly to concepts of SA:Vol, diffusion and concentration gradients.
Students gain an understanding of what enables the dog’s capabilities as well as demonstrating a real-world application for concepts studied. It is also a great way for students to see that having a working knowledge of these topics is not purely academic but can lead to some pretty awesome career paths!!
The incursion can also be adjusted to cater for lower year levels as needed.
This Incursion can also be conducted online!
